Preliminary Ecological Appraisal (PEA)

Site assessments begin with a Preliminary Ecological Assessment (PEA), evaluating the site’s potential to support protected habitats and species. Through analysis of our findings, we identify constraints and opportunities for proposed developments.

Here’s how BlueJay will take your site through this process:

⦁ Desktop Study: A desktop study evaluates potential habitats on-site and in the surrounding area and identifies nearby designated sites of nature conservation importance. This is done through analysis of maps, aerial photography, and data from local records centres. We also examine modern and historic maps to understand the evolution of habitats on and around the site.

⦁ Field Survey: During field surveys, we use UKHabs2.0 to map and classify the various habitats and ecological features within the site. We identify plant species and record any field signs or evidence indicating the presence of protected species. Additionally, where feasible we expand our assessment to include the habitat immediately adjacent to the site, recognising its potential impact on the presence of protected species.

⦁ Report: The PEA report offers an overview of the ecological context of your site. It recommends targeted surveys where necessary and suggests measures to appropriately avoid, mitigate, or compensate for impacts on biodiversity. Additionally, the report provides initial recommendations for enhancement measures to ensure your project aligns with national and local planning policies and delivers biodiversity net gains.
