Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG)
A Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) Assessment has become an essential requirement in the UK planning process, mandated under the Environment Act 2021, it requires most developments to demonstrate how they will deliver at least a 10% improvement to the
biodiversity value of the application site.
BNG was made mandatory for major developments from 12 February 2024, extending to small sites on 2 April 2024, and is expected to extend to Nationally Significant Infrastructure Projects from November 2025.
Certain exceptions to the BNG requirements do exist, including householder applications (e.g., small extensions), de minimis projects with negligible ecological impact, and developments under permitted development rights. Despite these exceptions, all developments must still comply with other relevant ecological legislation and local planning policies.

⦁ Baseline Assessment: We assess the site’s baseline value using data from the UKHabs survey and the Statutory Biodiversity Metric. This enables us to evaluate the current habitats and compare it with the proposed development plans, helping to identify any potential impacts and informing necessary adjustments to meet net gain targets.
⦁ Percentage Gain/Loss Calculation: We calculate the biodiversity gain or loss based on the proposed development plans, this allows us determine whether the project achieves the 10% net gain target or if modifications are required.
⦁ Expert Guidance and Solutions for Net Gain: If the assessment reveals a net biodiversity loss, our ecologists provide recommendations on strategies to achieve net gain. This can include habitat enhancement, creation of new habitats, and off-site compensation options.
