Principal Ecologist

Location: Hampshire / Hybrid working
Contract: Permanent, full-time
Salary: £50,000–£60,000 depending on skills and experience

BlueJay Ecology is a growing independent ecological consultancy delivering high-
quality ecological advice across the residential, commercial, infrastructure,
education, renewable energy and public sectors. As our workload continues to grow,
we’re looking for an experienced Principal Ecologist to join our close-knit team of
specialist ecologists and play a key role in the next stage of our journey.

This is an exciting opportunity for someone who enjoys leading technically
challenging projects, mentoring others and helping shape the future of a growing
business. You’ll have genuine influence over project delivery, technical standards
and the continued development of our team.

The Role

You’ll lead a diverse portfolio of ecological projects from inception through to
completion, providing technical leadership and ensuring the highest standards of
ecological consultancy.

Working closely with clients, planners, engineers and architects, you’ll oversee
project delivery, mentor colleagues and help continue building BlueJay Ecology’s
reputation for providing practical, proportionate and high-quality ecological advice.
We’d love to hear from you if you have:

  • Extensive ecological consultancy experience.
  • Experience leading infrastructure, residential or landscape-scale projects.
  • Expertise in one or more of the following:
    o Habitats Regulations Assessment (HRA)
    o Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG)
    o Protected species mitigation licensing (particularly dormice or badgers)
  • Excellent report writing and technical review skills.
  • Strong project management and client relationship experience.
  • Experience mentoring and supporting ecologists.
  • A full UK driving licence.

 

Please note that this is a hybrid role with regular office-based working required. We are therefore ideally looking for someone based in Hampshire or the surrounding area, or otherwise within reasonable travelling distance of our Hampshire office. The role combines office, home and site-based working.

Ecologists

Location: Southampton or surrounding areas (field-based or remote working)

Job Type: Full-time / Contract

Responsibilities:

  • Plan and conduct ecological surveys and assessments.
  • Analyse data and prepare detailed reports for clients.
  • Provide technical advice on ecological issues and environmental regulations.
  • Collaborate with team members and assist in mentoring junior staff.

About you:

  • A degree in an environmental-related field.
  • Experience conducting Phase 1 and 2 Habitat Surveys, including
    assessments according to UKHabs methodologies, and producing maps and reports.
  • Experience in protected species surveying.
  • A full driving license and a personal vehicle insured for business use.
  • Proven ability to liaise effectively with client representatives and manage projects.
  • Skill in finding solutions to ecological challenges.
  • Excellent report writing and oral communication skills.
  • Membership with CIEEM beneficial but is not essential.
  • Familiarity with DEFRA Metrics/BNG is advantageous but not essential.
  • Holding a protected species licence (or close to obtaining one).

Senior Ecologist

Location: Hampshire / Hybrid working
Contract: Permanent, full-time
Salary: £36,000–£45,000 depending on skills and experience

We’re looking for an experienced Senior Ecologist who enjoys managing projects,
solving ecological challenges and building lasting relationships with clients.

This role offers the opportunity to work across a diverse range of sectors, taking
ownership of projects while continuing to develop your technical expertise and
supporting more junior members of the team.

The Role

You’ll manage ecological projects from survey through to reporting, liaising directly
with clients and delivering practical, high-quality ecological solutions.

One week you could be designing bat surveys or reptile mitigation, the next advising
on Biodiversity Net Gain, Ecological Impact Assessments or planning applications.
No two projects are the same.

We’d love to hear from you if you have:

  • Ecological consultancy experience.
  • Excellent report writing skills.
  • Strong project management abilities.
  • Experience developing and maintaining client relationships.
  • One or more protected species licences, or significant experience in areas
    such as:
    o Reptile mitigation
    o Bat survey design
    o Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG)
    o Ecological Clerk of Works (ECoW)
    o Protected species mitigation
  • Experience supporting or mentoring junior staff.
  • A full UK driving licence.

Ecological Clerk of Works (ECoW)

Location: Hampshire / South of England
Contract: Permanent, full-time
Salary: £31,000–£37,000 depending on skills and experience

We’re looking for an enthusiastic Ecological Clerk of Works (ECoW) to join our
growing team.

This role is ideal for someone who enjoys working on construction sites, building
positive relationships with contractors and clients, and helping deliver practical
ecological solutions.

The Role

You’ll undertake ecological supervision across a variety of construction projects,
working closely with contractors, site managers and clients to provide clear, practical
ecological advice.

You’ll need a broad understanding of ecology, enabling you to confidently identify
issues on site, provide pragmatic solutions and ensure ecological protection
measures are implemented effectively.

We’d love to hear from you if you have:

  • Previous ECoW or site supervision experience.
  • A broad understanding of UK ecology and protected species.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • A practical, solutions-focused approach.
  • The ability to think on your feet and provide pragmatic ecological advice.
  • CSCS card (desirable).
  • Safety Critical Medical certification (desirable).
  • PTS accreditation (advantageous)
  • Experience working with reptiles and/or dormice (advantageous).
  • A full UK driving licence.

 

This is a predominantly site-based role, and we’re happy to consider applicants based outside Hampshire who are comfortable travelling to project sites across the South of England. Regular travel forms an important part of the role, so you’ll need to be happy spending time out on site and travelling to where our projects take you.
